Public Meeting in Support of Bahais of Iran - June 8 2009 : Some 300,000 Baha’is live throughout Iran, making the Baha’i Faith the country’s largest minority religion. Baha’is have been targets of discrimination and violence in Iran since the religion began there in the mid-nineteenth century. In 2008 Iranian authorities arrested seven Baha'i leaders who have now been imprisoned for over one year without access to legal counsel. Soon, they are headed to trial. No evidence has been made public. Punishment, if the seven are found guilty, could be death.

The LV Baha'is and other concened citizens gathered on June 8 2009 at the Bethlehem's Serenity Peace Garden in an effort to raise public awareness and to encourage our U.S. Senators to co-sponsor and support S. Res 71 which condemns the government of Iran for its state-sponsored persecution of its Baha'i minority and its continued violation of the International Covenants on Human Rights.

Unity Feast - December 31, 2008 : As many of you know, the Baha'i Nineteen Day Feast brings together the community of a given locality for prayer, the reading of scriptures, the discussion of community activities, and for the enjoyment of each other's company. The feasts are designed to ensure universal participation in the affairs of the community and the cultivation of the spirit of brotherhood and fellowship.

We were very pleased to have a Unity Feast on New Years Eve which was enjoyed by the Bahais and their friends. There were Baha'i and inter-faith readings, prayers, poetry, stories, music, dance, and food. Many thanks to the George's for hosting this.

Birth of Baha'u'llah 2008 : We had a fun celebration on November 12 at Little Pond to make the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh, the founder of the Bahá’í Faith. It was hosted by members of the Bahá’í Community of Bethlehem (City), PA. There were prayers, singing, socializing, and a nice potluck dinner.

Bahá’u’lláh, whose name means The Glory of God, was born into Persian nobility in 1817 in Tehran, Iran. He showed incredible intellect and spiritual capacity in his youth, and was known as the 'father of the poor', because of his charitable work and passionate interest in social justice.

Bahá’u’lláh 's Teachings include the oneness of God, the oneness of religion and the oneness of humanity; the elimination of prejudice; the equality of women and men; the harmony of science and religion; universal education; and the importance of living a life of virtue and service to humanity.

Declaration of the Bab - May 2007 : May 23 marks the anniversary of the night in 1844 when a young man in Persia named Siyyid Ali-Muhammad quietly announced that He was a Messenger of God, come to herald a new age for the world of humanity that would fulfill prophecy for Christians, Muslims, and followers of other religions.

For the people who are now Baha'is, it was the birth of their religion.

Baha'i communities around the world celebrate the anniversary with special devotional programs and gatherings on the evening of May 22. Believers suspend work, and children and youth take off from school.

The Lehigh Valley Baha'is celebrated this holy day in Bethlehem PA at the home of the Lawrence family.

Birth of the Bab - October 2006 : On October 20, Baha'is celebrated the Holy Day commemorating the Birth of the Bab, who was born in Shiraz, Persia in 1819. Although he was an independent Prophet, the Bab's primary mission was to proclaim the imminent arrival of "Him Whom God shall make manifest," namely Baha'u'llah (1817-1892), the Founder of the Baha'i Faith. Baha'is observe the Holy Day by abstaining from work and holding joyous meetings open to all. This year, Hong and Sally warmly welcomed the community and friends to their home and everyone enjoyed prayers, devotional readings, music, fellowship, and, as always, good eats.

Feast of Names - August 19 2006 : The Lehigh Valley Bahá'ís enjoy the Feast of Names (Azma) hosted by the Padfied family. The Nineteen Day Feast can be considered the centerpiece of Bahá'í community life. Held once every 19 days, it is the local community's regular worship gathering... and more.

Open to both adults and children, the Nineteen Day Feast is the regular gathering that promotes and sustains the unity of the local Bahá'í community. Although its program is flexible and adaptable to a wide variety of cultural and social needs, the Feast always contains three elements: spiritual devotion, administrative consultation, and fellowship. As such, the Feast combines religious worship with grassroots governance and social enjoyment.

The use of the word "feast" might seem to imply that a large meal will be served. That is not necessarily the case. While food and beverages are usually served, the term itself is meant to suggest that the community should enjoy a "spiritual feast" of worship, companionship and unity. Bahá'u'lláh stressed the importance of gathering every nineteen days, "to bind your hearts together," even if nothing more than water is served.

During the devotional program, selections from the Bahá'í writings, and often the scriptures from other religions, are read aloud. A general discussion follows, allowing every member a voice in community affairs and making the Feast an "arena of democracy at the very root of society." The Feast ends with a period for socializing.

Ridvan 2006 Outing : The twelve days of Ridván (April 21-May 2) mark the holiest days of the Bahá'í year and have been termed the "Most Great Festival" and the "King of Festivals" by Bahá'u'lláh himself. This was the time when He proclaimed His Mission as God's Messenger for this age at a garden in Baghdad, that became known as the Garden of Ridván (Paradise).

How fitting that the Lehigh Valley Bahá'ís celebrated this historic event by spending a wonderful day in a garden... in this case Bownman's Hill Wildflower Preserve near Washington's Crossing PA.

Ayyám-i-Há are the Intercalary days of the year to make it equivalent to the solar year (365 days). Bahá'u'lláh specified that these days should be observed immediately prior to the 19 Day Fast. These days are a time of celebration, charity, hospitality and gift-giving.

Martyrdom of the Bab - July 2005 : At about noon on July 9, 1850, the Báb was suspended by ropes against a wall in Tabriz, before a firing squad and a multitude of curious onlookers, and shot to death. A youthful believer, who had refused to be separated from his Master, was executed with Him. Their mangled bodies, torn to pieces by bullets, were dragged outside the city walls and left to be eaten by wild beasts. One hundred and fifty years later, Bahá'í communities in thousands of cities around the world gather on the date of the Báb's martyrdom to remember His sacrifice and to pledge allegiance to His mission.

This year we met at the Montoney home in Quakertown. Prayers were read and the heroic and tragic story of the Bab's execution was recounted.

Afterwards we shared lunch and conversation. Thanks very much to Maureen, Woody, the girls, and Napolean for their wonderful hospitality!

Ridvan 2005 Trip to Grey Towers : The Baha'i Festival of Ridvan (pronounced RIZ-von) is the holiest and most significant of all Baha'i festivals and celebrates the public declaration, in 1863, of the divine mission of Baha'u'llah, the prophet upon whose teachings the Baha'i Faith is founded.

Each year, Baha'is celebrate the Festival of Ridvan during the 12-day period of April 21 through May 2. The first, ninth, and 12th days of this festival are observed as holy days on which work is suspended.

Several Baha'is from the Lehigh Valley community celebrated Rdvan 2005 by taking a trip to Grey Towers in Milford PA.

In 1912 Abdu'l-Baha was invited to Grey Towers by its owner, Gifford Pinchot, who was the Secretary of the Interior in the Theodore Roosevelt Administration. Pinchot later became the Governor of Pennsylvania and was considered to be a very progressive administrator.

Sec'y Pinchot and other Government officials consulted with Abdul-Baha who then spent the evening at Grey Towers. We do not know the content of the discussion and the decor of most of the home had changed since 1912, but it was wonderful to walk in the same steps of the Master.

Monthly Devotional Gatherings : The Word is the master key for the whole world,
inasmuch as through its potency the doors of the hearts of men, which
in reality are the doors of heaven, are unlocked.   -- Bahá'u'lláh

Bahá'ís believe that the Word of God has the power to change lives and bring families and communities together. Prayer and meditation are core to Bahá'í daily practice. Every believer in Bahá'u'lláh is enjoined to pray and meditate morning and evening in private.

There are also benefits associated with gatherings where people come together to partake of the Word of God. Public Devotions are held each month at Little Pond Arts Retreat in Nazareth, PA. These unique gatherings employ sacred text from all religious traditions and place a special emphasis in integrating the Arts and Spiritualuality. The gatherings are open to all and are presented as a service to the residents of the Lehigh Valley.

Let Justice Roll : In mid-October 2004, Baha'is participated in two events sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Interfaith Mobilization 2004, an ecumenical group of persons from more than 15 faith communities.

The non-partisan effort is encouraging people to become as informed as possible about the well-being of the nation, including impact on both American and global citizens, and to connect their voting in the upcoming election and beyond with the foundation principles of their faith.

Organizers also stress that the work of Mobilization 2004 is non-partisan and does not endorse political candidates of parties, but advocates progressive programs and policies for the relief of poverty and for racial and social justice.

The Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr., senior minister of the Riverside Church in New York City, was the featured speaker.

Feasts and other happenings... : The Nineteen Day Feast is an administrative function, attendance at which is a privilege of membership in the Bahá'í Faith. The components of every Feast are devotional, administrative/consultative and social. It is the principal gathering of Bahá'ís in a locality. The Feast is observed on the first day of each Bahá'í month, when the Bahá'í community gathers for worship, consultation and fellowship.

The devotional portion of Feast consists of reading from the Bahá'í Writings, and can also include music, singing or chanting. The consultative portion of Feast enables each individual in the community, including the children, to offer suggestions and comments related to the affairs and projects of the community. The social portion of Feast consists of sharing refreshments and enjoying each other's company.

Feast is observed in every Bahá'í community around the world, but each community creates its own Feast program. The celebration of Feast in one community can be very different from its celebration in another community - and this is a joyous reflection of the Bahá'í community's unity in diversity.

If you are not yet a Baha'i, you are most welcome to join us at Feast by the simple act becoming a member of the Baha'i Faith. You will be welcomed into our family and will discover the key which promises to bring you to a new level of spiritual awareness.

Kingdom Project Fundraiser - Feb 22, 2003 : From American Baha'i February 27th, 2003

"Last month’s newsletter called for communities to consider sponsoring fund-raising dinners during the upcoming holy month of fasting. The community of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania had already been planning such an event for February 22nd, so they were well ahead of the rest of us.

And what an event they had planned! Twenty-five souls from surrounding communities braved the nasty winter weather and were rewarded with an incredible dinner in a spiritually charged atmosphere.

The evening included some wonderful devotions offered by several members of the group, a presentation by the Kingdom Project Office on “The Progress of the Kingdom Project” and a meal catered by the organizer of the event (who coincidentally is a professional chef). [Our very own Bettina Castagno-Chappelow.] No detail was overlooked, including the candlelit banquet room and a wonderful display of fine clay art for sale to benefit the Kingdom Project.

The contributions of $1,200 in cash, and pledges (still being tallied) generated by the dinner will benefit the Kingdom Project, but the spiritual energy of the night was equally of value."
