Laura Receives Racial Justice Award : Congratulations to Laura Lawrence as she is honored by the Bethlehem YWCA for her efforts to eliminate racism and empower women on August 13th 2009 at the Candlelight (Blue) Restaurant in Bethlehem. Laura was awarded the 2009 Racial Justice Award and received a copy of a Proclamation recognizing her efforts from the PA State Legislature. In her comments, Laura stated that it was the Baha'i Faith that inspired her to serve the community in this capacity and closed with this quote from Baha'u'llah "...that all nations should become one in faith and all men as brothers; that the bonds of affection and unity between the sons of men should be strengthened; that diversity of religion should cease, and differences of race be annulled -- what harm is there in this? ...Yet so it shall be; these fruitless strifes, these ruinous wars shall pass away, and the `Most Great Peace' shall come..."

Fireside at the Lawrences - March 2007 : We had the great pleasure of having Catherine Mboya as a recent visitor to our community. Catherine is from Kenya and was recently a delegate to the Conference of Women at the United Nations. She is a former member of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of Kenya. She spoke to a small group at a "fireside" talk held recently at the Lawrence's. Catherine spoke of her early life in Africa and of her career with the World Bank and the United Nations. She talked also of the rapid progress of the Baha'i Faith on the African continent.

A fireside is a presentation on the themes and principles associated with the Bahá’í Faith, usually in a person’s home and followed by a question and answer period. Our community members lovingly open their homes to invite inquirers to learn about the Baha’i Faith, and ask any question that’s on their mind. There are usually other Bahá’ís present to help answer questions. The question and answer period is totally open and the questions don’t have to follow the subject of the presentation.

If you are interested in attending a fireside, please contact a Bahá’í in your community or use the resource on our contact page . If you would like to attend a fireside but don’t see one on our calendar that fits your schedule, call anyway and we will be able to accommodate you.

Service Day : The position of the Baha'i Faith regarding service to others is quite clear... to the extent that work is consciously undertaken in a spirit of service to humanity, Bahá'u'lláh says, it is a form of prayer, a means of worshipping God.

Individual Baha'is serve the community in a variety of ways. Some are active members or officers of civic organizations such as the NAACP, the PA Human Rights Commission, and the YWCA Racial Justice Committee. Others serve through artistic expression which uplift soul and spirit. Still others help individuals every day in small yet significant ways.

On November 12, 2006 and on prior days, Baha'is joined other friends to repair, paint, landscape, and prepare for sale a residence of a dear friend and co-religionist who is seriously ill and in great need of help. This type of communal activity draws us closer as a community and fulfills the Baha'i dictum that "love manifests its reality in deeds, not only in words -- these alone are without effect".

Study Circle Tutor Training : Bahá'ís are actively engaged in developing knowledge, skills, and spiritual insights that enable them to act as effective human resources and which are vital to the integrated process of personal and social transformation. Presently, such collective learning takes the form of study circles—a local, collaborative, self-directed learning process being undertaken by Bahá’í communities around the world.

Recently, Lehigh Valley Baha'is met for a training session to better learn to facilitate future study circles.

Participants in study circles often experience a new sense of direction in life, better relationships with family and friends, and a fruitful re-evaluation of the contribution one can make to the wider community. All are welcome in the classes, regardless of their ideas or beliefs. Study Circles are ongoing. If you wish to join one of them please contact us at bahailv@bahailv.org

Bahá'í House of Worship - Sydney, Australia : Our new friend Sara recently returned from a trip "down under", and was kind enough to share these beautiful photos she took of the Bahá'í House of Worship in Sydney, Australia.

There are at this time seven Baha'i Houses of Worship around the world, and several in the planning stage. They are places of prayer and meditation for all: a gift from the Baha'is that demonstrates their faith in the oneness of God, the oneness of His Prophets and the oneness of humanity.

Although their architectural styles differ widely, the nine sides and central dome common to all of them symbolize at once the diversity of the human race and its essential oneness. Devotional programs are simple, consisting of prayers, meditations, and the reading of selections from the sacred scriptures of the Bahá'í Faith and other world religions. Music is provided by unaccompanied choirs.

As conceived by Bahá'u'lláh, the House of Worship is intended as the spiritual center for various dependent institutions dedicated to scientific, humanitarian, educational and administrative service.
